Jim Hendry must really be feeling the pressure to turn things around. In perhaps his biggest overpayment in a trade since he picked up Juan Pierre for three really good pitching prospects, Hendry traded an entire city for utility player Jeff Baker.
Baker was batting .190 for the Rockies this year and Hendry felt it worth trading the city of Albuquerque for him. I didn't even know the Cubs owned Albuquerque, but I've got to think Albuquerque has better long-time value than Baker.
This is reminiscent of the trade the Cubs pulled off in 1984 when they acquired Bob Dernier, Gary Mathews and Porfi Altamirano for Bill Campbell and Mike Diaz. Some wit in the Chicago media reported that the Cubs traded Campbell and Diaz for Dernier, Mathews and a bottle of wine.
