It's that time of the year when baseball is about to take a break and Bud's Mid-Season Farce will take place. As is required, each team is to provide an All-Star for the roster. Chicago's airwaves have tried to address which Cub is worthy or expected to go. Here's my take:
Derrek Lee - I love him, and he's been hot recently (another homerun tonight), but Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, Adrian Gonzalez and, oh yeah, Albert Pujols are all more deserving.
Geovani Soto - No chance. Amazing fall off even for a sophomore. From starting last year's All-Star game to many times this year not being worthy to start a Cubs game.
Mike Fontenot - Sportsline has him listed as the 32nd most valuable secondbaseman.
Ryan Theriot - A bunch of homeruns (7) from The Riot and a nice .340 OBP, but Tulowitzki, Ramirez and Tejada all outshine Ryan.
Aramis Ramirez - Could have been the Cubs representative had he not separated his shoulder.
Alfonso Soriano - How in the world could he be fourth in the balloting? Oh yeah, because the voting is a joke. God willing he won't crack the top three and then he HAS to be left off the roster.
Koske Fukudome - See Geovany Soto, except that Koske actually started (again) hot and faded earlier than last year.
Milton Bradley - Whatever Jim Hendry thought the Cubs would get out of Bradley hasn't shown up yet.
Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Rich Harden - As I was concerned going in to this season, these three (really Zambrano and Dempster) have underproduced what was expected. I throw Harden in with them since his annual injuries provide less terrific cumulative numbers.
Kevin Gregg - Sure he has 13 saves, but he's blown a few and Hoffman, Wilson, Bell, Broxton and K-Rod are all studs.
Carlos Marmol - 19 holds is among the leaders for set up men, but a 4 ERA and 1.6 WHIP keeps him home.
Ted Lilly - The favorite of a bad bunch. 12 quality starts (out of 16 games started), 1.13 WHIP, 3.35 ERA and a 3.826 K/BB probably have him St. Louis bound.
Randy Wells - Here's my dark horse. He has 8 QS (out of 10 - better percentage than Lilly), 1.09 WHIP, 2.57 ERA and 3.154 K/BB. He was brought up to replace the injured Harden and has quietly become the ace of the staff. The thing that probably keeps him off the roster is a woeful offense and a horrible bullpen. He should be 8-2 at least right now
I wouldn't argue too hard if Lilly is selected, but Wells is more deserving.
