Earlier this week, in an effort to show the Cubs that he hasn't soured on the weak October performances the last two seasons, Matt Bentel - Owner/Operator of DoorMatts and Bon Vivant - swung past Wrigley Field to pick up a bracelet to "get in line" for tickets going on sale this Friday (today).
Fast forward to Friday morning, 6am. Dave Eannett, Sports Director for WGN Radio, goes to Wrigley Field to draw the number that will identify the front of the line. Dave pulls number 8396. So if you have number 8395 you're at the end of the line.
Matt's number? 8393. To add further insult to injury, John Williams, Morning Stud on WGN Radio, says as a consolation for the fan who is last in line he will give away a special prize.
Keep in mind that not every bracelet was handed out. So it turns out no one had 8395. But someone did have 8394. The prize? Tickets to Elton John and Billy Joel at Wrigley Field. Matt missed it by 1.
Add that to the Copperfields missing the two greatest pitching performances by the Cubs and you have to wonder if CFCL owners have their own version of the Billy Goat Curse.
