Did anyone else catch the unveiling of the statue of Ernie Banks on Monday before the Home Opener? I thought it was pretty cool that Billy Williams, Hank Aaron, Ron Santo and Fergie Jenkins were there to help celebrate.
I guess we can overlook the fact that the sculptor couldn't figure out the proper grammatical structure of "Let's Play Two" (he put Lets Play Two on the statue).
The speeches weren't that great, Santo kept referring to the 512th homerun that Banks hit off Pat Jarvis "on a day much like today". But the main problem/question I had was "What in the hell was Jesse Jackson doing there?" I know there was racial tension during the playing days of Banks, Aaron and Williams and Aaron acknowledged Jackson being a resource for him during those times, but c'mon. And then he's ON THE FIELD when Ernie throws out the first pitch?
Anything for a photo op, I guess.
