Sports item I picked up from the ABC local news (when was the last time someone said that?) Ned Colletti, former Cubs employee and new Dodger GM, beat the Cubs to Rafael Furcal. Reports have it that Furcal has agreed to a three year, 50 million dollar deal.
I guess security isn't what it's all about. Cubs were offering 5 years for less dollars per year.
When I first heard that I was very disappointed. I assumed the Furcal thing was a done deal and we would be seeing a Wrigley press conference this weekend. But then I reminded myself of a conversation I had with Matt B. a couple of weeks ago.
He wasn't sure he wanted Rafy in Wrigley. Last year Furcal had something like a .224 daytime batting average. Add that to his off the field issues and Matt wasn't sure if the Cubs needed to spend tons of money on Furcal rather than spreading the wealth a bit (turns out they did spread the wealth, over paying two middle relievers).
Of course, with the Furcal topic, you could argue both sides (and believe me we did - Great defense, more speed for Dusty to misuse). So since the Cubs didn't get him, I'm mega-disappointed and I will walk around saying "He's a powder-keg and he can't hit during the day."
Kind of like getting shot down by a girl in a bar and walking away saying "She wasn't that pretty anyway."
Not that any of us have ever had that experience.

Yeah, I think you're right, Rich, that it's largely sour grapes. Everything you wrote about the negatives of Furcal are correct, but then the Cubs still have that gaping hole at SS (I'm not quite a Ronny Cedeno believer...yet). Now the next best alternative is to go after Julio Lugo, which will mean giving up prospects, which will lessen the stable of talent they have to offer when trying to fill the gaping holes in the OF. Of course, we've got Neifi locked up for a couple years, so all is good, right?
