Hey Cub fans! Start buying up those World Series Tickets! Not only did we sign Scott Eyre, we got Bobby Howry and - hold your breath - John Mabry!
Actually I think Eyre is a fine signing and Howry isn't so bad either (too much money spent on those two, but glad to have them in the pen.) Mabry is obviously for depth (think Grieve, etc.)
But I need some help on the Hot Stove Rumors. We're in discussion with the Dodgers to get Milton Bradley? Is this good? Would we rather have Bradley than Pierre (assuming we could get either one)?
In a perfect Cubby World I would love to see Pierre and Furcal sitting atop the lineup - don't know if that's possible. Am I missing something with Bradley? I know he's capable of putting up big numbers, but there seems to be a ton of baggage and injury that follows him.
What are your thoughts?

Since Mike Remlinger worked out so swimmingly, we should try to corner the market on 30-something middle relievers by handing them $12-14 million and watching them break down. *sigh* I'd rather see what Van Buren can do. You can always cheap, effective options to fill out a bullpen like the White Sox did with that big, fat hick.
I'd rather that they would have used that money to sign a slugging OF like Brian Giles who could theoretically patrol the cozy center field confines of Wrigley Field. Just imagine how many RBIs Derrek would have had if he batted cleanup with Brian getting on base at a .430 clip in front of him. It'd almost be enough to make one forget about the black hole that goes by the name of Neifi. I don't really know if acquiring both Furcal and Pierre would be a good idea. Both are life-long leadoff men and they might not like batting second.
Winning cures alot of ills so if Milton were on a contending team, I think he'd do a real good A.J. Pierzynski imitation. An outfield of Murton-Milton-Giles would be ideal I think. Mahalo

I hadn't considered a Brian Giles finding his way to Wrigley (he's rumored to the Yankees). But I like your thinking, Matt. As a Cub fan and (selfishly) as owner of Dem Rebels and Giles and Lee. The Cubs signing Giles could push me up to 6th place next year.
Murton, Bradley and Giles would certainly look appetizing, but I think we need Furcal then for Dusty to misuse at the top of the lineup. If the Cubs sign Furcal (or trade for Pierre for that matter) I have no doubt that Dusty will still manage in such a way that D. Lee ends up leading the team in stolen bases again.

Why do I check this board almost everyday? Hmm, I know it isn't because I have a lot of extra time. If that's not it, then it must be because I need a quick pick me up, you know, a little laugh to take my mind off the daily grind.
Has any one, of non-Chicago birth besides me, ever noticed how entertaining it is to listen to sports radio in Chicago? And since I can't get much meaningful, level-headed and informed Milwaukee sports talk radio, listen I must!
The last couple of posts are straight out of the WSCR, ESPN 1000 or Comcast Sports Channel playbook. I am fairly certain that the Cubs, who finished behind the teams to the immediate north and south, will end up with Milton, Giles, Furcal and Pierre.
And Murton is the next coming of Billy Williams.
It's almost Christmas, you guys might as well ask for Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon as well. I know, I know, too many leadoff hitters and Ramirez would take some RBI away from D. Lee. Bad Idea.
Well, let me clue you in on a few tidbits I've heard this week. Robin Yount and Dale Svuem are back with the Brewers. This will undoubtedly put them over the top. Also the Brewers are going to trade either Lyle Overbay or Prince Fielder. Fielder goes to the White Sox for Berhle and Garland or Garcia. If Overbay goes he goes to San Francisco for Jason Schmidt and a middle reliever.
Oh and let's not forget the Ben Sheets trade to the Yankees, for virtually nothing!
Merry early Christmas third place Cub Fans. Enjoy. How about them White Sox!!! I would rather type Brewers, oh wait I can type that too! Its good being me!
Hey Cub fans, start buying those World Series tickets. Season tickets are now available for the Sox and the Brewers.

We've got to do our wild-assed dreaming now, before the harsh reality of Jose Macias patrolling RF arrives with Spring Training. Actually, if signing John Mabry means Jose Macias loses his roster spot and is removed from Dusty's Toolbox, I'm all for it.

Now that is funny!
The picture, not the Mabry / Macias comment, although I completely understand that as well.

Latest rumor: Cubs send Ronny Cedeno to the Nationals for Brad Wilkerson, straight-up. Supposedly this one came from Barry Larkin.

Steve, Steve, Steve, I think you should re-read my previous post. I was being sublimely critical of the Cubs' squandering their money on a couple 65 inning pitchers who Dusty could misuse. Your first clue should have been my Remlinger reference, he sucked and was seemingly always hurt. And I had forgotten about LeCrybaby Hawkins who was similarly abysmal. My whole point was that they could have better spent their money on big time slugger like Giles. Now I knew they had little to no chance on signing. Reports now are that he re-signed with the Padres (sorry Rich). Looks like that 6th place dream is over. Anyways, way to over-react dude. Do you like going up to strangers' kids and tell them that their is no Easter Bunny or Santa Claus too? Wow, if you're this haughty when the Brewers hit the .500 mark, who knows how big your head will get if they can actually win more games than the lose next year. Never mind that they are still haven't ever made the playoffs in the NL or haven't won 82 games in what 20 years? Yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking. But we won the Series in 198blah blah blah. Save it, I don't care. Mahalo Matt

MAAATTTT!!!!!
Dude - ixnay on the onay antasay! My girls are getting smart enough to click their way through various bookmarked pages. The dream is still alive in Casa Bentel.
Come to think of it, if my girls are smart enough to use the computer, they would be smart enough to stay away from Message Forums that are used by geeks like us.

Anyways, way to over-react dude. Good thing you are keeping my post in complete perspective! Do you like going up to strangers' kids and tell them that their is no Easter Bunny or Santa Claus too? Well now that you mention it, I just realized that it is "Tis the season" for spreading my special joy once again. Off to the mall after I finish this response. OK Matt, that was just a joke. I know you take me literally so I will point out when I am just yanking your chain from now on. I am just kidding, I really don't talk to stranger's kids. Not sure if you are aware, but most countries have laws against strangers approaching children. Actually, I am a bigger fan of helping the delusional retain their grasp on reality. I believe I have a special gift when it comes to Cub's fans in particular. Wow, if you're this haughty when the Brewers hit the .500 mark, who knows how big your head will get if they can actually win more games than the lose next year. I can't really answer that yet, but I think your about to find out! But I respect your use of the word "Haughty" Well done. Never mind that they are still haven't ever made the playoffs in the NL or haven't won 82 games in what 20 years? Well, if you are honest with yourself, you would have to admit that the Brewers have been in the NL for a much shorter time than the Cubs. "Yeah, yeah, I know what your thinking" that "the Cubs have been in the playoffs a couple of times since the Brewers joined the NLblah blah blah". In the event that your knowledge of baseball is as limited as your sense of humor, the Brewers played in the American League for a little while. Remember the league with the DH? The league where pitchers don't hit? So while I think they have not been a NL fireball, maybe you could give them a little credit for their abrupt change in managerial philosophy. As for the 20 years comment, facts are hard to argue. But still finished ahead of the Cubs LAST season. FACT! Explain that! Yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking. But we won the Series in 198blah blah blah. You admit that you what I'm thinking and yet you admit you don't understand my point. Now I am confused! By the way, we never won the World Series. But we did play in one in my lifetime. Can you say that? Didn't think so! As my friend Bill used to say, "You doth protest to much, methinks" Your post was far too passionate for someone who doesn't care. So I am left to think you do! OK after five years, I have to ask, do you think you live in SoCal or NoCal or on beach in Hawaii? What's with the Mahalo, my gnarly dude? Now if any of you Cub fans are willing to back your team, how about putting some money where your mouth/heart is? I am willing to bet the Brewers win a World Series Before the Cubs do. And, I am also willing to bet the Brewers make the playoffs before the Cubs do? Any takers or only fakers? Here Matty, Matty, Matty! Come out and play!

The following was from MLB.com
Brewers GM Doug "Melvin and assistant GM Gord Ash had hoped to woo free agents Scott Eyre or Bob Howry -- Ash called Eyre personally -- but both signed lucrative contracts with the Chicago Cubs."
Apparently the Cubs beat the Brewers to both. Our loss, your gain.

Apparently the Cubs beat the Brewers to both. Our loss, your gain. Let's see if Eyre and Howry can come anywhere close to repeating their performances of 2005 before naming winners and losers on this one. I'm not convinced...

Well, Cub fans, it looks like you get an early Christmas present this year. Juan Pierre is coming to Chicago's northside next season. As reported by MLB.com...
"Two high-ranking MLB sources confirmed that the Marlins have agreed to send Pierre to the Cubs for right-hander Sergio Mitre and pitching prospects Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto."
I keep checking to see if the Brewers have traded Overbay yet, but no moves so far.
Merry Christmas Cub Fans!
