I'm not really going to dis MLB for trotting out what seems to be a relatively accurate correlation, but what gives me the howling fantods is the way in which they (Klayman) continue to hype this as if it were some novel insight. A close second is the (IMO) stupid name they've christened it with. The O-Zone?! Please. Sounds like jargon better suited to a Kinsey Institute publication.

Maybe I don't quite get it, but isn't this pretty much the same as Runs Scored / Runs Allowed? There can't be that much difference between counting runs scored by RISP and all base runners. Sure, you're smoothing your data by taking a ratio of a ratio, but, like I keep repeating, it's not particularly insightful. At least looking at AVG when batting with RISP can be said to measure individual clutch hitting (ostensibly).

It's like Klayman was sitting around, all despondent because there's no NHL this year and seething about Bill James' popularity, when suddenly he gets the brilliant idea to try to fit some kind of blue zone effectiveness stat into the baseball realm. It just feels silly and sounds even sillier when said out loud.
Don't believe me? Stop what you're doing right now and say 'O-Zone' fifteen times. You'll feel like a total dork.

Trust me.
There's already a statistic for everything in baseball, why does MLB feel the need to hype this?

;D ;D Man, that 10,000 character limit comes pretty fast when you specify a color for every letter... ;D ;D

Nick, This is the first I've heard of the "O-Zone" stat, so I can't really comment on it at this point.
So I was going to remark about you having WAY too much time on your hands, if the multi-coloredness of your post is an indication.
That went out of the window, though, when I noticed that the be-fezzed pugilisic monkey that used to be your avatar has been replaced by what appears to be a severely overweight nude person (gender unknown) underwater.
What the hades is up with that?

Whoops! Someone was leeching images off my server and I punitively redirected all image requests outside of my domains to one of a few randomly selected shock sites (goatse, that-which-cannot-be-named, lemon party, and skinny dip). All of which, I should add, are definitely NSFW [not safe for work]. The upshot being that, until this person fixed those bandwidth leeching links, the background image to their blog was decidedly embarassing. Of course, I forgot that I am hosting my avatar on that server too.... As for the multi-color links: #!C:/Python23/python
import os import random
colors = [ 'Black', 'Red', 'Yellow', 'Pink', 'Green', 'Orange', 'Purple', 'Blue', 'Beige', 'Brown', 'Teal', 'Navy', 'Maroon', 'Lime Green' ]
text = raw_input("Colorize this: ")
newText = '' i = 1 for l in text: r = random.randint( 0, 13 ) newText = newText + '[ color=' + colors[ r ] + ']' + l + '[ /color]' if 9975 <= len( newText ): fileName = 'newText' + str( i ) + '.txt' file = open( fileName, 'w' ) file.write( newText ) file.close() i = i + 1 newText = '' file = open( 'newTextLast.txt' , 'w' ) file.write( newText ) file.close
print "done"
As for the O-zone: mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_com_press_release.jsp?ymd=20040921&content_id=865615&vkey=pr_mlbcom&fext=.jspmlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_news.jsp?ymd=20040921&content_id=865660&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jspmlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/stats/ozone.jspThe article that set off this rant is currently beyond my Google-Fu but broke down the playoff series in light of O-Zone and was slightly inconclusive. And a rant that is better than mine: www.all-baseball.com/mikesbballrants/archives/015588.htmlThe fact that you haven't heard about it before now, despite MLB pushing it with an official press release speaks volumes as to it's utility. I thought they had dropped it after their late September launch fell on its face but then they did this analysis of the various division and league series which demonstrated, among other things, that the Yankees should have lost to the Twins.

Has anyone else noticed the political ads that are often banners on these pages? That really pisses me off!
I come here to see what everyone is talking about, although Nick went way over my pretty little head this last time, as a respite from real life and not to beat in the face with politics!
Am I the only one who noticed that "Check here to see Bush's Flip Flops" banner?
Either get rid of all of it or offer equal time, and include Nader!
While I will not bore anyone with my personal politics, but I would find it offensive with either or any political party buying space on these boards. If we need to get an ad free zone, I would support looking into it again.
Sorry to hijack this post but I am not sure how to do a seperate one!

Has anyone else noticed the political ads that are often banners on these pages? That really pisses me off! Fair disclosure: I have a vested interest in decreasing the market share of Internet Explorer because that browser causes a lot of extra work for me due to its bad support of Internet standards. Non Paid Advertisement: I don't get the ads on this page because I'm using Mozilla Firefox as my web browser. You can download and install this browser and automatically block pop-up ads, use tabbed browsing, and--after installing the extension--block in-line advertising on individual web pages. With the Adblock extension you need only right-click on the offending image or iFrame and select the appropriate Adblock option from the context menu. If you're sneaky about it and use the wildcard then you can block anything coming off that web server, not just that particular ad. For instance, many banner ads have an address that looks like: ads.fastclick.com/foo/bar/crappyBanner.gif. By using the wildcard I can block anything from that server by selecting: ads.fastclick.com/*If the site hosts ads on its own server, you can also block at the directory level. This way you don't get the ads, but you still get the pretty pictures on that site. Unless they serve the images and ads from the same directory . . . which they generally don't . . . Not yet anyway . . . Which I don't understand . . . But am glad nonetheless. Anway, you can download the browser from: www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/and your extensions can be found at: update.mozilla.org/?application=firefoxThe web is a much nicer place without all the advertising. I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread...
