It's that Magic Number time of year, and as I was looking at the Magic Numbers in the various divisions this morning, I noticed something odd.
The Cardinals are cruising to the NL Central Division championship and coming into Friday's action, their Magic Number over the 2nd place Astros is 6. What's weird is that because the Astros have played 5 more games than the Cubs already, the Cards' Magic Number over the Cubs is 8 - two more than it is for the Astros, despite the 'Stros being ahead of the Cubs in the standings.
Ok, with the explanation provided it doesn't seem quite so odd. But it seemed mighty strange when I saw it today.
