This is the best that can be gotten for Juan Cruz? I'm not sure I understand this deal (in fact, I know I don't). Has Cruz's stock fall this far? If this was the best offer the Cubs got and if they didn't want Cruz on the major league roster, I'd just as soon they stick him in AAA until mid-season when non-contenders are dumping.
Puzzling.

September 3, 2004: The Chicago Cubs trade minor league P Andy Pratt to the Milwaukee Brewers as the player to be named later in the Ben Grieve trade.I know Grieve will come in handy off the bench over the next month, but I STILL think the Cubs should have been able to have gotten more for Juan Cruz. In fact, he probably would have come in mighty handy in the bullpen this season... David

I'm sure he would have come in handy rather than having to rely on the likes of Remlinger, Farnsworth or Wuertz. Just don't forget about the second half of that deal. We got the Southern League MVP in Richard Lewis too. He could be a very good second basemen for us for the next 5-7 years if Dusty decides to get past his intense dislike for rookies.

Just don't forget about the second half of that deal. We got the Southern League MVP in Richard Lewis too. True. The trade could very well end up being a "win" for the Cubs when we look back on it in 2010. However, my main beef about the original trade was that the Cubs gave up probably their main bargaining chip at the time and got nothing, NOTHING, that would help them win in 2004 - the year they were supposed to be winning it all. Even it Pratt pitched well in the minors this year and had a bright future, the fact would remain the Cruz was a guy teams had been clamoring for last year and earlier in the offseason. If his value had fallen to the point where all the Cubs could get in return were a couple of speculative prospects, I think they would have been wiser to hang on to Cruz for use later in the year - either on their own staff, or as trade bait to a team who had fallen out of contention. Ah well. Obviously the Cubs had deeper problems this year than a lack of return on Juan Cruz... David
