Right now we allow teams to keep players who were traded to the AL in the previous season or off-season. For example, I could keep Miguel Cabrera if I wanted to. He can’t ever be ACTIVE unless he returns to the NL, but I could hang onto him on reserve. I’m not sure having this option is worth all the Constitutional ink expended on it.

I'm good with this and while I haven't lost a player of the level of a Miggy, I have lost a few that I might have considered keeping.

I'm considering keeping Lamb at $.01. Chances are the Twinks don't let him go anywhere but the opportunity cost for me is relatively small.
OTOH, not so many uses for this rule given the extra overhead it generates for David. If it honestly saves a little time then toss it. Otherwise I like it just for consistency's sake.

I like how we can keep AL players within the season, but I don't like holding onto guys in the offseason. I'd say, if your guy is in an AL organization on the day we have to protect our 23, you can't keep him. If he goes to the AL between that day and the time you have to send in your final keeper list, you can't keep him. However, if he goes to the AL during that week in between the keeper list and draft day, I think he's safely on your team for that season. I think this happened to Sean Casey several years ago (came into the NL right before Opening Day).

Well, if my swiss cheese memory serves me correctly, I was one of the few to vote against this and allowing AL stats to be used mid-season. I see no reason to change my mind a couple years later. I'd even go a step further and abolish AL stats too. I doubt that'll get much support though. Mahalo

I always felt it's only players like Lamb who are the only candidates to be reserved in this manner. Cheaper than a 13th round minor leaguer and virtually guaranteed to be able to play at the Major League level. The only drawback to me is that it clogs up a reserve roster slot which can be pretty valuable. Mahalo Matt

I'd give just a little bit more leeway here and eliminate that first deadline. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to keep an ALer on your roster through the entire off-season. I agree, though, that if Roster Freeze Day comes around and he's not in the NL by that time, he should be an automatic release.
