I've created a version of our Excel roster sheet using the contract status scheme described in my post above. In addition to the symbols and letters mentioned, I made a couple other changes: - I removed the decimal point from the salary, as well as the leading zero for single-digit amounts. This was done mainly to save space.
- I used only the last digit of the year -- so rather than 2008 appearing as "08" it appears as simply "8". This might take a little getting used to, but it saves space and reduces clutter. There's little risk of confusion, as we've never seen players signed to 8-year contracts, so there shouldn't be any concern of 2008 vs 2018.
- I included a hyphen in front of the contract year. I thought it would be easier to read if salaries and contracts were expressed as 12-9
Take a look and let me know what you think. For me, it's extremely jarring. I'm so used to the letters that we took straight out of the Rotisserie League Baseball book and have used for nearly 25 years. That said, I think this new scheme makes a lot of sense, and as it's mostly intuitive it shouldn't take to long to become second nature. Here's a link to the file: home.comcast.net/~dmahlan/download/rosters_newcont.xls

In the words of our Tartan Clad King - Crikies!
But I agree with David, since it's number driven it shouldn't be too hard for it to become second nature.
The one disagreement I have is that there will be an issue by leaving off the first digit of the year. Just wait until you see Prince Fielder's long term contract next year.

David,
It is confusing but I think I can get used to it. How about we just use dollars instead of the decimal point for cents any way? FAAB would be 100 not 1.00 This would make everything consistent. If you would rather not use the word dollars, why not call them units.

Also on your draft roster, I believe I have Kemp, Gwynn and Hamels for an X contracts as well, don't I?

How about we just use dollars instead of the decimal point for cents any way? FAAB would be 100 not 1.00 This would make everything consistent. This is something I've thought about for the past few years - since there's no longer really a tie between the amounts we bid and the amounts we pay into the prize pool, there's not really the need to express the salaries in pennies anymore. Or any monetary amount, for that matter. As you mention, we could easily consider them "units". When it comes to the auction, there is a certain CFCL tradition - 24 years worth - of bidding in pennies, and the old timer in my would hate to see that go. That said, I think we've only got 4 guys left from the true penny days, so if everyone else just started bidding in dollars I doubt we could stop it. Also on your draft roster, I believe I have Kemp, Gwynn and Hamels for an X contracts as well, don't I? I'd have to look into them -- Kemp and Gwynn I'm pretty sure are not X-eligible. You'd need to have owned them when they were promoted from M contract status to D. On Hamels, it would depend on the timing of the trade. Let me check and I'll update the post at in the blog if necessary. Thanks! Finally, on a side note, there are those "Ads by Google" that appear at the top of the page here in the forum. They're targeted to the page content, so you'll see a lot of ads for baseball related stuff -- the Baseball America Prospect Handbook is up there right now. Also up there, because of my team name no dbout, is "David Cop-A-Feel: Watch the friskiest of illusions. Only a Super Deluxe. www.superdeluxe.com" Ouch.

Ok, it was easier to check than I anticipated: - Hamels was a minor leaguer with the Ruffins, but had been activated and was already on a D contract when you acquired him from the Ruffins in 2006
- Gwynn had been signed out of the Free Agent Pool by the Lambchops during the 2006 season, so he couldn't have ever been on an M contract with the Stones
- Kemp was originally a Kenndoza Line farm hand, but by the end of the 2006 season he was on the Rebels' active roster, which means he couldn't have been on an M contract by the time he came to the Stones

David, Sorry to make you do all that checking. I guess I need to reread the X factors once again.

David, Sorry to make you do all that checking. I guess I need to reread the X factors once again. No problem! As evidenced by the corrections that have been noted so far, I definitely need some oversight from each team to ensure I've got their info right!

I understand the whole "saving space" issue but I really think it will be less confusing with the expirations reading 08, 09, 10, etc...I tried looking at the roster spreadsheet as I thought you said you had changed them there to see what it looked like but I must have been mistaken.
Also.....I can't open the eligible positions sheet for some reason.....any thoughts as to why?

Also.....I can't open the eligible positions sheet for some reason.....any thoughts as to why? The roster spreadsheet is the still using the old contract scheme. I created a separate file with the new contracts and posted the link in the note above. Here it is again: home.comcast.net/~dmahlan/download/rosters_newcont.xlsNot sure why you wouldn't be able to open the Games Played file (I assume you're clicking the link from the Download Center?). Are you getting an error message of some kind? Try it again, and if you still can't open it, let me know and I can try e-mailing it to you.

I still can't open the Games Played file. I am clicking it from the download center just like I do to look at the updated roster excel file. When I click the updated roster file a little box comes up and says where the file is going to be opened from (home.comcast.net......) and then there is two boxes where it says open with and Microsoft Excel is the chosen program. An "ok" box and a "cancel is there but when I try and open the Games Played file the "ok" box never becomes a choice. So I can never click "ok" as it stays greyed out.
I don't know what else to do.

If you use Firefox you can install a plugin called Adblock. Include the Filterset.G adblock filters and you'll be amazed at how fresh and clean the web looks. I haven't seen ads on this forum for years now. More topically, I say we notate our stuff in units but call them pennies when drafting. The leading decimal is always kind of a pain to deal with. OTOH, I do kind of like having the years done as YY instead of dropping single digits. Then again, it's only a preference and the preference of a corn whiskey swilling, would-be king at that.

I don't know what else to do. Try right-clicking the link to the file and Save Target As... instead of open. Save the file to your desktop and then use Excel to open it from there. That is, if you haven't tried this already...

Rajai Davis should be 2 -9+ as I activated him from M last fall.

I hadn't tried that yet Nick but tried it after posting and it worked. Still not sure why it wouldn't work the other way or why I didn't think of trying the Save Target As.....right away but the important thing is that it has worked.
Thanks!
I use FireFox and will definitely look into the Adblock plugin. Do you have a problem with it blocking other things that you WANT to see?
