Congrats everyone,
Since I joined the league in 2000, there has been at least one trade before this date (6/12) in every year, until now. Actually we had never gone into June without a deal being made until 2007 (2003 5/31). Only 2002 saw a trade made in April. '00 & '06 share the same day (5/10). And the second latest first trade was May 24 in 2005.
I believe a perfect storm happened this year allow this to happen. All the lower rung teams are either hard to get ahold of (Paul Z, Nick, Matt B) or tough negotiators (Steve & Eric/Paul) or both. Another factor was the absence of a truly wretched team like I have repeatedly fielded over the years. There is also a huge middle class of teams chasing the Ruffins so even the 5th through 8th place teams have a very good shot at 2nd.
All of this has made for a very frustrating month of trade talks. One would think with 5 top twenty prospects (6 if you include Vitters) and another half dozen cheap, productive major league players (7 cents & below), one would have at least one productive negotiation by now, but that one would be wrong. Christ, I only got *1* nibble for Justin Upton. He might not be the best prospect since Griffey, but he's close.
Anyways, I'll stop ranting now. It's annoying because if I could make one or two good trades, I'd have a good shot at knocking off Holian. Though the words "good trade" & Bulls rarely ever make it into the same sentence. I'll have to defer to our esteemed colleagues who have been around longer than me to determine the absolute latest date the First Trade of the Season has occurred. The News Flashes for '99-'97 skip the in-season trades so I couldn't find out when those trades happened.
Well, take care y'all. Good luck finding a trade partner. Mahalo
