I probably won't do this every week, but I want to call out Rich for an excellent addition to the CFCL report.
Over time I think the Monroe Doctrine will follow the same arc as the Sunday funny pages. At first they were an afterthought, thrown around the outside of the traditionally oversized Sunday paper as extra protection from the vagaries of delivery boys and girls around the country. However, comics eventually proved so popular amongst the common folk that they're now treated as royalty—tucked safely inside. I foresee a future where we immediately scroll to the bottom of every report David churns out just to read Rich's running commentary on League developments and the like.
So I say to you, Rich, "Huzzah!"

I foresee a future where we immediately scroll to the bottom of every report David churns out just to read Rich's running commentary on League developments and the like. Oh, swell. Now the pressure's really on to make the report itself compelling enough to that CFCLers won't skip it entirely and just read the Doctrine -- equivalent to getting your news from People magazine. Just kidding, of course. I'm glad someone finally posted some kudos to Rich. I didn't want to have to be the one to do it since I've already provided my opinion in the report itself and the periodic e-mails. It's good to have another laudatory voice heard from.

Nick, First of all you are more than welcome to do this every week! Thank you (and David) kindly for the words * blushing* in a public forum. Many of you have e-mailed me your kind thoughts (soon to be the topic of another MD!) I appreciate it. And with all the acknowledgement it pushes me to have something worth you taking the time to read. No pressure . .. . really. I was going to petition David to put the MD in the middle of the Report. Rushin is at the beginning of SI and Riley is on the last page. No one of consequence has ever been placed in the middle of the publication (Royko? Beginning. Verdi? Front page of the sports section). Since the MD, by comparison, is not of consequence, being in the middle would be appropriate. That way the more compelling points of the Report would precede and follow the "comics". (I'm just hoping I come closer to Calvin and Hobbes and further from Fred Bassett).

Howdy, Well, I've already applauded his efforts in e-mails so I'll add my voice to the growing chorus. Great job Rich. I guess I'll save the bandwidth and include my thoughts on the newly expired Winter Waivers. 2/3 of the claims were for pitchers. I'm ignoring Ray King since Rich came to his senses and waived him soon after claiming him. The most surprising claim for me was Tim Hudson. He was atrocious for most of the year and I'm sure he could be had for less money in the draft but maybe the Chops know something I don't. The early front runner for Winter Waiver of the year has to be Scott Thorman. Little did Rich know that the Braves would shuffle LaRoche off to Siberia and hand Scott the first base job. Now Craig Wilson might siphon off the ABs against lefties but I think the 1B job in ATL is Thorman's to lose. More surprising to me were a couple of players who weren't waived. I tried guessing who'd be cut with 5 teams. I came pretty close to the Coppers and DoorMatts (wrong with 2 players each), but I missed wildly with Kenn (5) and Teddy (4). Nick surprised me with 3 players so I guess that's my average. I'm glad I didn't bother to do Paul's as kept all his AL players and those were the first ones I chose to waive for everyone. The most surprising keeper for me was Mark Prior. I seriously doubt anyone would have claimed him at .19, but then again I thought I was safe in waiving Hudson so what do I know? Nick? Why for the love of Allah are you holding onto Scuffy Moehler? Finally, Teddy's firm grasp on Eric Bruntlett is perplexing. Ten cents does not a keeper make of a utility infielder. Of the guys that I lost, the only one I slightly regret is Jonathan Sanchez but mostly because the defending champs got him. Nippert goes into Spring Training as the odds on favorite for the #5 job but I soured on him after acquiring him in a trade. Ethier probably won't hold off Matt Kemp for long and he'll be a 4th OF in short order, unless of course Gonzo gets hurt. Sanchez probably wasn't going to make the roster cutdown for the Draft but I was hoping to get him back for about 1/2 the price. Dave has to cut at least 5 players and only 3 are pretty obvious to me so there's still hope for that to happen. Steve and I tied for most players lost, but since King got waived I hand him the crown. I think I led all owners in most players claimed after the first round though. I was only able to slip Matt Albers through waivers of the three cuts I had to make. It looks like the Picts, Rebs and Stones helped themselves out the most. Matt Wise should be my 2007 version of Ray King. All reports say he should be ready for Spring Training. And if not, I have Kline there to back him up. As a previous owner of Marcus Sanders, I was happy to get him back in the fold. An added bonus was snagging him before the Coppers and Ruffins could grab him. ;D Well, take it easy guys. Ta-ta for now. Mahalo Matt

PS. What is up with Paul's insistance on holding onto Jason Neighborgall? It's never a good thing when you have more Wild Pitches than Strikeouts. Or 3 times as many walks as Ks. Mahalo Matt

I give the new Rich column two thumbs up and three and one half stars and a four forks. I laughed, I cried and I laughed again and again. It was better than Cats! It is high on my "must read" list each installment.
Keep up the good work Rich.

Nick? Why for the love of Allah are you holding onto Scuffy Moehler? He's going to blow up at Minute Maid! Forced to concentrate harder now that he doesn't have the security of the spacious, heavy air in Miami, Moehler will bear down and dominate in Houston. At least that's what I've got him projected to do. And I based my winter waivers entirely on messing with your projections. It was difficult to hang on to Cain, but then I figured the Rebels would get him instead of a deserving team such as the 2007 [blank]. Speaking of, isn't it about time for the annual unveiling of your team's name?
