I know I complain about injuries like Gragey complains about his lack of quality starts and everyone else complains about Neifi, but this is ridiculous:
I just found out that Ryan Freel is out for the season. I realize "out for the season" does not mean the same thing now that it meant several months ago, but it seems like each day over the past two months I've had to deal with some new serious injury. Other Kenndoza players out for the season: Jeff Davanon, Elizardo Ramirez, and probably Mike Gonzalez, Khalil Greene, and Jim Edmonds.
Freel also joins Willy Taveras and Carlos Beltran and Chipper Jones on the list of wounded just this week (although in Chipper's case, when is he NOT hurt? He's the only guy I know who gets injured during the mere action of being activated from the DL).
I really shouldn't complain - I'll still finish in the top five and have a shot at second. My closest contenders, the Splinters and the DoorMatts, both have had to deal with their share of injuries too (much much more for Teddy than Matt), and even if everything all came together for any of us, it's doubtful that we could've caught the Ruffins (David, my hat is off to you). Still, this whole thing has left a very sour taste in my mouth.
So I have two bits of advice for those who want to avoid this sour taste:
1) Don't build your team around injury-prone players. This seems obvious, but I had no idea I had so many during the draft. It was only after the draft was over that I couldn't believe it. My top offensive players included Jim Edmonds, Cliff Floyd, Moises Alou, and Nomar Garciaparra. Nomar is the only one of that foursome who *might* make it to 120 games. Then I went and traded for Chipper!
2) Stay the course - don't get desperate. If you looked at the trades I made before the deadline, you can see the desperation. Especially painful was trading the 10-cent Ryan Howard. I apologize to the rest of the league for that pathetic trade. I'm sure I was able to justify it at the time - I *really* needed some bodies and I thought Pedro would be a great starting pitcher for two months. I never thought I'd say this, but I would've rather had Dave Bush and Jason Jennings than Pedro. Ugh. Not only have I made the Coppers stronger for 2007, but I made them stronger in 2006! Dave passed me in three pitching categories - all because the pitchers I gave him were better than the ones he gave me. I don't mean for this to be sour grapes - I'm just stating my point - when you trade out of desperation, these are the kinds of results you can expect.
Anyway, I appreciate those of you who read through this whole thing. It helps ease the pain a little bit, to talk to my 11 shrinks. Thanks.
